Transforming eating disorder training in tertiary education

Almost one in three (31.6%) Australian adolescents are engaging in disordered eating behaviours, yet despite the rising prevalence, accessing effective treatment remains a significant challenge. KPMG was engaged to lead one of the world’s first comprehensive national reviews of eating disorder training content across multiple health professions, providing a powerful case for systematic change in healthcare training.

      What was needed

To tackle the growing challenge of eating disorders, KPMG was enlisted by the National Eating Disorder Collaboration (NEDC) – a key initiative supported by the Australian Government – to drive a transformative approach. The goal? To deepen the understanding of how tertiary education can be improved, ensuring future healthcare professionals are better equipped to provide high-quality, accessible care for the prevention and treatment of eating disorders. This collaboration aimed to bridge critical gaps and set a new standard for professional eating disorder training in Australia.

      What we did

Our mission was to uncover the critical gaps in graduate competencies across Australian tertiary institutions and create a roadmap to close them. We began by designing and distributing a comprehensive survey to every university in Australia, gathering insights into the existing shortcomings in eating disorder learning content.

We didn’t stop there. Our approach involved consulting with more than 45 experts from 15 of Australia’s leading universities and health institutions, tapping into their collective knowledge to identify the most critical challenges. We facilitated dynamic workshops with universities, health departments and institutions, collaborating to develop practical, impactful solutions that could transform tertiary training and improve care for those affected by eating disorders.

      What we delivered

Tertiary education is pivotal in shaping the future of healthcare, and this project marked one of the world’s first comprehensive national reviews of eating disorder training content across multiple health professions. It brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, enabling the NEDC to develop actionable strategies that will transform tertiary curricula across Australia.

The report developed by KPMG provided a powerful case for systematic change in how we train the next generation of healthcare professionals. Its findings have resonated far beyond Australia’s borders, capturing the attention of both domestic and international organisations committed to tackling the escalating public health challenge of eating disorders.
