Ian Gardner is a Partner in KPMG in Bermuda’s Advisory practice and leads Risk Consulting Services (GRCS) for the KPMG Islands Group, which represents KPMG member firms across Bermuda, the Caribbean and the Crown Dependencies, delivering shared expertise, operational alignment and consistent client service. He specialises in the insurance and wider financial services sector, bringing some 30 years’ experience across Bermuda, the UK and emerging markets, with significant expertise in internal audit, governance, enterprise risk management, and regulatory engagement. Ian also leads ESG and climate change risk management services for KPMG in Bermuda and works closely with the Bermuda Monetary Authority on governance, risk and internal audit expectations.
Ian leads a range of outsourced and co-sourced internal audit services. He has led numerous internal audit external quality assessments in Bermuda and the UK over the past decade, providing benchmarking insights and helping clients develop future-state visions and roadmaps for their IA functions. Ian brings extensive internal audit experience from senior leadership roles in industry, as Audit Partner at Direct Line Group Plc and Chief Auditor for RSA Plc’s Emerging Markets division, covering 24 countries across Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Ian also brings considerable experience over 25 years in Sarbanes Oxley (internal controls over financial reporting) services.
Ian has acted as an approved Skilled Person for s166 reviews on behalf of the UK’s PRA and FCA and has undertaken multiple independent reviews at the request of the BMA in Bermuda. He contributes to industry thought leadership through speaking engagements, including IIA events in Bermuda and as a keynote speaker at the CIIA Internal Audit Leaders’ Conference in the UK. His broader experience includes advisory and assurance services for board effectiveness, governance frameworks, enterprise risk management and compliance framework, organisational culture and change/ transformation governance and risk management.
