At KPMG, our Indigenous Client Tax Services professionals serve the unique needs of Indigenous organizations, communities, and cultures across Canada. Our clients include First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities and governments, Indigenous-owned companies and businesses, trusts and individuals. Working with you and as your trusted advisors, we can assist in structuring economic development, navigating complex tax laws, and ensuring tax compliance obligations are met. Our collective goal is to safeguard your business, assets, and communities for the future. With a deep understanding of Section 87 of the Indian Act and the Income Tax Act, we help Indigenous communities preserve their economic development, generate wealth, and can assist businesses and Status Indians—on or off reserve—in navigating income and commodity tax-related rules, exceptions and benefits.

Supporting Indigenous communities with expert trust guidance

Trust advisory services for Indigenous trusts are designed to provide legal guidance and comprehensive support to Indigenous Trusts in the management, administration and strategic planning of their trust assets. These services are tailored to address the unique cultural, legal, and financial considerations that Indigenous communities face, helping to ensure that trust resources are protected, optimized and aligned with long-term community goals.

We are a service grounded in Indigenous knowledge and understanding, with relationship-building at the core. Guided by leadership competencies, vision, strategic thinking, trust-based approaches, executive presence and agility, we support leaders across economic development and community health. We draw on extensive experience in Indigenous engagement and consultation, with a keen understanding of the legal and practical considerations related to development on reserve, treaty lands and Indigenous-owned lands, to deliver outcomes that advance economic empowerment and community well-being. With dedicated experience in the energy and resource sector, our work includes developing benefits agreements, socio-economic inclusion programs and equity agreements.

We are a team that helps clients develop their capital projects. This includes development of business plans, commercial agreements and development approaches that result in bankable partnerships, projects and investment structures. Our team also conducts rigorous due diligence and arranges competitive financing solutions for capital projects and equity investments in capital projects. Working at the forefront of Indigenous financing, we bring hands-on experience with mandates that rely on a combination of commercial banking, the First Nations Finance Authority, the Canada Infrastructure Bank and various loan guarantee-based solutions available to fund Indigenous leadership in capital projects.

Our team supports clients who own, or are seeking to invest in, active businesses across a wide range of industries. We bring deep experience in transaction processes and provide tailored support in valuations, transaction advisory, corporate finance, value creation and restructuring. We assist Nations to evaluate investment opportunities, buy or sell businesses, refinance existing operations and raise capital. Our experienced deal team leads every step of the process, bringing the right expertise and resources to help achieve your Nation’s transaction objectives. With a collaborative approach and a focus on your priorities, we align our team and timing to meet the specific needs of your Nation and your opportunity, helping you make confident, informed decisions for long-term success.

KPMG works alongside Indigenous organizations to reimagine child and family services in ways that prioritize the safety and well-being of children, align with Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being, and emphasize prevention-focused approaches. Guided by respect and collaboration, we share learnings to empower Indigenous communities to lead the development of programs that reflect their unique needs. Our goal is to create meaningful impact and help build a future where every child is safe, nurtured, and supported.
