The German M&A market is gaining momentum again. Transaction values are rising significantly, while the number of transactions has barely increased. What lies ahead in 2027? And what role will artificial intelligence play, whether as a tool in the transaction process or as a driver of acquisitions? The M&A Outlook 2027 provides answers, insights and forecasts.

Industrial technology, attractive valuations, fiscal stimulus and AI-adjacent opportunities are driving renewed inbound appetite for Germany, particularly from U.S. investors. And we expect that momentum to continue. We asked more than 200 M&A decision-makers across corporates, private equity and family offices what they expect next. Find out in our M&A Outlook 2027.

What you’ll learn from the study

      • How long will interest from foreign buyers last?

According to the forecast, the number of takeovers by foreign buyers will continue to rise for the time being. Two factors are driving demand: strong US stock markets are boosting buyers’ financial strength, and many private equity owners are under pressure to sell their holdings. Technology, industrial capabilities and infrastructure remain the most sought-after sectors.

      • How will the German M&A market develop by 2030?

The number of transactions is expected to rise significantly in 2027 and reach its peak in 2028. This trend is driven by government investment, succession planning in SMEs and more favourable financing conditions from mid-2027 onwards. The study examines domestic takeovers, acquisitions from abroad and acquisitions by German companies abroad separately.

      • What role does AI play in the transaction process and as a catalyst for takeovers?

The use of AI in M&A processes has doubled within a year. 61 per cent of respondents expect AI to trigger a new wave of acquisitions and disposals within three years. In the scenario of an AI-driven upswing, cross-border transactions will increase first, with domestic acquisitions following later.

      • Why do transactions fail, and where is value created after completion?

The study highlights the obstacles currently holding transactions back, the levers companies can use to create value following an acquisition, and where difficulties most frequently arise during integration. Five recommendations for action summarise the findings.
