James Carnagie

James Carnegie has over 25 years development experience, mainly in Africa, with an emphasis on the rural poor. This began in agriculture, and has since widened into livelihoods in natural resource management and rural development, and recent work has focused on private sector development, mainly in agribusiness across Africa, based first in Kenya and then in Zimbabwe as regional Director of the African Enterprise Challenge Fund.

James holds a BSc in Agronomy, and an MSc in Agricultural Extension from the Reading University, UK. Recently he gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation from Stellenbosch University, South Africa. He has worked on long and short term assignments providing direction and programme management; monitoring and evaluation (including results measurement and learning); Institution and capacity building; and training and facilitation.

Through his career, James has worked with, and for, a range of different actors including civil society, NGOs, the private sector, government (national and local), and bilateral and multilateral donors across 18 different countries, mainly in Africa. This has enabled James to develop a practice to policy level understanding of development issues, providing a solid framework for analysis and the development of appropriate rural, natural resource-based interventions in both fragile/conflict affected and developing environments.
