      The challenge

The traditional internal audit function (IAF) still has a fairly large manual component, even in 2026. Think of planning, risk assessments, building files and creating reports. That’s despite existing tooling.

It’s a natural consequence of working thoroughly and thoughtful stakeholder management. After all, to make the right decisions, the right analyses have to be made.

However, the manual work takes up so much time that there is often too little left for truly in-depth analyses and more conversations with relevant stakeholders. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of the IAF's effectiveness. To break that vicious cycle, AI can be deployed.

In a multidisciplinary team of internal auditors, data engineers, and AI specialists, we build AI agents in short sprints that take over and enhance parts of the audit process.

      The approach

Mollie and KPMG have joined forces to deploy AI responsibly and strategically within internal audit. The goal of making the IAF work more effectively was a priority. The latter a step-by-step process where technology takes on an increasingly central role.

Central to the teams' approach is the concept of an AI Factory Platform. A platform containing specialized AI agents that support internal auditors in all steps of the audit process.

The agents gather information, perform analyses and prepare tasks and reports. The internal auditor remains responsible for interpreting the results and the final decision-making.

The various agents are connected to each other via an AI agent orchestrator. As a result, insights can be reused within the IAF and across the entire audit process. This creates not just a collection of separate tools, but an integrated platform that strengthens the audit function as a whole.

      The result

Thanks to the AI Factory Platform, internal auditors will now arrive at the right relevant insights faster. The IAF spends much less time on manual work and can add much more value. Think of focusing on in-depth analyses and much better risk assessment. All of that in less time.

The team that made the difference

The development of the AI Factory Platform is a great showcase of close co-creation between Mollie and KPMG. Multidisciplinary teams of auditors, data engineers and AI experts worked together on the AI vision, roadmap and concrete realization of the platform. Together with the approach, it provided an environment in which rapid innovation was possible. Ultimately, this resulted in a pioneering, high-quality platform.
