Continuing on the journey of smart technology transformation

As the energy sector stands on the verge of an AI‑enabled Intelligence Age, the Global tech report 2026: Energy, natural resources and chemicals (PDF 1.1MB) explores how leaders are integrating energy technology more deeply into operations to succeed in a fast‑moving and unpredictable environment. While AI and cybersecurity remain top priorities, the research highlights how energy organisations are also assessing and investing in a broader range of emerging technologies – XaaS, edge computing, digital twins and quantum – balancing current adoption with future ambition across sustainable energy, energy efficiency, and the broader future of energy landscape.

Drawing on insights from over 250 energy leaders, the report examines where targeted digital initiatives, such as production optimisation, predictive maintenance, and integrated asset management, are already delivering measurable value. It also seeks to address the challenges of scaling beyond pilots, outlining how clear strategy, strong governance, and a human‑centric approach are critical to unlocking sustained performance and long‑term returns.

      Key findings from our research

      What energy leaders are saying:

      • Technology investment

One in five ENRC organisations surveyed have indicated that they are achieving technology ROI in excess of 200%.

      • AI adoption

Just 29% of ENRC respondent businesses are still in AI piloting phases – by next year that will fall to only 2%.

      • AI agents

96% of energy leaders surveyed believe that managing AI agents will become a key workforce skill within the next five years.

      • Cybersecurity and risk

Better cybersecurity management is the most widely anticipated benefit (36%) of achieving the organisation’s technology goals, followed by stronger risk management (29%).

There is an exciting path ahead – although many hurdles to overcome. I firmly believe that AI and other emerging technology can benefit all businesses who adopt it with a clear strategy, strong governance, and a human-centric approach that provides the right support for the workforce. I encourage energy leaders to keep up the momentum, converting technology investments into sustained operational performance and growing financial returns.
