The North East has always been a region that looks beyond its borders. From its industrial roots in engineering, energy and advanced manufacturing to its modern identity as a hub for digital innovation and green technologies, the region’s global outlook is part of its DNA.

Today, that outward ambition is stronger than ever. New data from KPMG’s Private Enterprise Barometer shows that 88% of North East businesses are hungry for international trade - the highest of any UK region. It’s a clear signal that the region isn’t just confident about the future; it’s actively gearing up to compete on a global stage.

At a time when the UK is reshaping its place in the global economy, the North East continues to stand out. With strategic assets such as the Port of Tyne, Teesport and the Blyth offshore energy cluster, and with major investment flowing into offshore wind, green hydrogen and fast‑growing AI‑driven data centres - the region has the infrastructure, expertise and ambition to fuel export‑led growth. Automotive manufacturing also remains central to the regional economy, with Nissan’s Sunderland plant exporting the majority of its output, even as the sector navigates a more challenging trading environment.

The opportunity is real: with the right support around trade, skills and connectivity, the North East can convert its distinctive strengths into sustained global influence.

A region confident in its future

Business confidence across the North East is striking. 91% of leaders say they feel positive about their organisation’s prospects, with over 40% describing themselves as very confident. And this optimism isn’t theoretical - it’s rooted in real investment, innovation and forward momentum.

Across the region, local strengths are translating into global relevance:

      • Newcastle’s expanding tech and life sciences communities, centred around the Helix and Science Central
      • Sunderland’s leadership role in the UK’s electric vehicle supply chain
      • Teesside’s transformation into a net‑zero industrial superpower

With nearly nine in ten businesses actively exploring international opportunities, the North East is demonstrating how regions - not just major cities - can power inclusive, export‑driven growth.

How ‘secure by design’ risk thinking is fueling a tech revolution

Technology is at the heart of the region’s ambition. 39% of North East businesses are putting tech front and centre in their growth strategies, aligning closely with national trends in digital transformation.

Artificial intelligence is also rising rapidly up the agenda - 36% of organisations plan to invest in AI, particularly in high‑growth sectors such as fintech, health tech and advanced manufacturing. Much of this progress is supported by the region’s strong university ecosystem, including Newcastle University, Durham University and the National Innovation Centre for Data.

But what really sets the North East apart is its approach to risk. Businesses aren’t just innovating - they’re doing so responsibly:

      • 72% are increasing their focus on cyber security
      • 54% are more aware of strategic and operational risks

This “secure by design” mindset is becoming a defining advantage, ensuring digital transformation is built on strong, resilient foundations - critical for sustainable growth in a complex global environment.

How talent Is powering the region’s growth journey

People are central to the North East’s global ambitions. Nearly half of businesses (48%) are confident in their ability to attract the talent they need, closely aligned with the national picture. This is encouraging for a region firmly positioning itself as a destination for high‑value skills.

With a strong graduate pipeline, rising inward investment, and transformational regeneration projects in Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham and Middlesbrough, the North East is increasingly seen as a place where people can build globally relevant careers, without leaving the UK.

As businesses scale internationally, the importance of talent only grows. Every new hire helps strengthen the region’s capacity to compete, collaborate and lead on the global stage.

A defining moment for the North East

The North East is at a pivotal point in its growth story. Its businesses are confident and outward‑looking. Its infrastructure is primed for global opportunity. Its innovation ecosystem is accelerating. And its people are driving a renewed sense of ambition.

The challenge now is to maintain momentum, by continuing to invest in digital infrastructure, trade capability, regional collaboration and skills.

If the region succeeds, it won’t just contribute to the UK’s growth story, it will help write it.
