The North East has always been a region that looks beyond its borders. From its industrial roots in engineering, energy and advanced manufacturing to its modern identity as a hub for digital innovation and green technologies, the region’s global outlook is part of its DNA.
Today, that outward ambition is stronger than ever. New data from KPMG’s Private Enterprise Barometer shows that 88% of North East businesses are hungry for international trade - the highest of any UK region. It’s a clear signal that the region isn’t just confident about the future; it’s actively gearing up to compete on a global stage.
At a time when the UK is reshaping its place in the global economy, the North East continues to stand out. With strategic assets such as the Port of Tyne, Teesport and the Blyth offshore energy cluster, and with major investment flowing into offshore wind, green hydrogen and fast‑growing AI‑driven data centres - the region has the infrastructure, expertise and ambition to fuel export‑led growth. Automotive manufacturing also remains central to the regional economy, with Nissan’s Sunderland plant exporting the majority of its output, even as the sector navigates a more challenging trading environment.
The opportunity is real: with the right support around trade, skills and connectivity, the North East can convert its distinctive strengths into sustained global influence.
