7 November 2023: KPMG Law and Global Legal Services have announced a significant expansion of their work in the legal services space, building on the longstanding global alliance between KPMG and Microsoft and the joint commitment to AI innovation announced by Bill Thomas, Global Chairman and CEO, KPMG International and Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO, Microsoft in July 2023. KPMG is utilizing Azure OpenAI Service to help define how KPMG firms’ legal professionals will help to deliver next generation technology solutions for clients, while also enhancing the capabilities of their colleagues.
The collaboration combines KPMG firms’ market-leading, multi-disciplinary expertise and consulting offerings across legal operations, technology, data and cyber security with Microsoft Azure and AI technologies. KPMG Digital Gateway for Law is one example of a technology platform that runs on Microsoft Azure – a practical illustration of how KPMG professionals are using Microsoft’s transformational artificial intelligence (AI) technology to offer increased value to clients.
KPMG firms’ suite of services are designed to offer complete access to legal support framed in practicality – preparing clients to adopt and implement generative AI within their legal teams and helping those teams advise on how to navigate the shifting legal and regulatory landscape.
Stuart Fuller, Global Head of Legal Services at KPMG International, said: “Generative AI is set to transform the legal services industry, and corporate legal departments. The combination of KPMG Law & Legal Services and Microsoft Azure will allow corporate legal departments and KPMG legal professionals to implement generative AI in a way that combines expertise, transformation and technology, to create a next generation of legal technology solutions. Central to this is how we plan to contribute to the responsible use and deployment of AI within organizations, and how KPMG professionals infuse AI into the legal advisory services and technology solutions they provide to the market and to clients. With early access to Microsoft Copilot and Azure OpenAI Service, KPMG legal professionals will pilot the technologies to spearhead new legal tech solutions."
Kelly Rogan, Vice President, Global System Integrator and Advisory Partners at Microsoft, said: “Customers need help to navigate the increasingly complex legal and regulatory landscape, and KPMG professionals are delivering next generation legal Services and solutions that will mitigate these challenges. We’re thrilled that KPMG is using Microsoft Azure and Azure OpenAI Service, within our trusted cloud environment, to deliver new value to its legal clients.”
James Thomas, Global Co-Head of Legal Technology at KPMG International, said: “There is a huge amount of noise in the legal market surrounding the impact of generative AI and Microsoft Copilot. By combining KPMG firms’ market-leading legal services and global footprint with Microsoft technology, deep technical know-how and implementation experience, we aim to provide clients with a depth of insight they can’t get elsewhere, including the full range of technical, data, legal, regulatory technology capabilities, and, how they can successfully implement the technology.”
Philipp Glock, Global Co- Head of Legal Technology KPMG International: “What makes this collaboration groundbreaking is how it can practically benefit colleagues and clients. For the 3,850 legal professionals in the global KPMG organization, this enhances our global upskilling program to use generative AI and be equipped with insights on how to support clients on their AI journey. It also offers an invitation to selected priority clients of both KPMG firms and Microsoft, to join a series of jointly facilitated deep dives on how they can prepare their businesses for generative AI adoption and how it can help them to navigate the increasingly complex legal and regulatory landscape.”
