• India’s defence transformation could mirror the telecom revolution. The key is to combine a clear long-term technology roadmap with policy support, funding and greater participation from startups and MSMEs. Initiatives such as iDEX, ADITI and DRDO’s Technology Development Fund are important steps towards building indigenous capabilities and reducing import dependence.
• For defence startups and MSMEs, the real challenge is crossing the ‘valley of death’ between developing a prototype and securing sustained orders. Innovation funding must translate into procurement and repeat business if we want a commercially viable defence ecosystem. A predictable acquisition process, backed by industry collaboration and access to global technology, will be critical to achieving self-reliance.
